In this lesson we look at how to add drives and PC systems to a TIA Portal project, using the SINAMICS G120 as the example. Just like PLCs and HMIs, drives are added through Add new device, but the list of available drive types depends on what optional software, such as STARTER, is installed. When selecting a drive, you choose the correct control unit, communication type such as PN for Profinet or DP for Profibus, and the appropriate firmware version to match the real hardware.

After adding the drive, it appears in the project tree and opens in the device view. From here, configuration begins with familiar steps: setting the device name, assigning the Profinet interface, and selecting the correct subnet. TIA Portal automatically assigns the next available IP address, although you can change it if needed. The lesson also introduces telegram configuration, which defines how the PLC and drive will exchange data, and channel diagnostics options.

Drives differ from PLCs and HMIs because they are smart devices with extensive parameterization. TIA Portal provides wizards, a parameter view, and commissioning tools, all of which become accessible once the drive is fully configured. A dedicated appendix module later in the course provides a deeper walkthrough of drive setup.

Back in the devices and networks view, the drive appears on the same Profinet subnet as the PLC and HMI. However, it initially shows as Not assigned because it is not yet controlled by a specific PLC. Selecting this option allows you to assign the drive to PLC1, creating an IO system link that prepares the PLC to exchange telegram data with the drive. Additional configuration is still required, but this completes the basic hardware integration step.

Commissioning often requires simultaneous visibili Commissioning often requires simultaneous visibility of logic, status bits, and diagnostics.

If the editor area is compressed, engineers rely on scrolling instead of observation. This increases the chance of overlooking conditions or transitions.

By floating diagnostics and collapsing unused panels, the logic regains priority on screen. The information that matters most becomes immediately visible.

The result is not just comfort. It is reduced cognitive load and faster, safer decision-making during live system work.
