In this lesson we introduce interlocks and explain how they are structured and managed within the project.

Interlocks are a fundamental part of PLC logic. They control whether outputs are allowed to energise whether sequences are allowed to start and whether a process is permitted to continue running. Rather than scattering interlock logic throughout assets and sequences this lesson shows how to centralise interlocks using a dedicated UDT.

The lesson explains why interlocks should not live inside individual asset data blocks. While they are derived from asset states such as valve health or instrument status keeping them embedded in assets makes systems harder to understand and maintain. Instead a shared interlock structure is created that can be passed through interfaces wherever it is needed.

Key topics covered in this lesson include

What interlocks are and why they are important
Why interlocks should be derived from assets but stored centrally
Using a dedicated interlocks UDT to group related interlocks
Reducing interface size by bundling logic into interlock structures
How interlocks support complex sequences without bloated interfaces
The difference between asset driven interlocks and software derived logic
Managing sequence readiness using a single boolean interlock
Why interlocks should be evaluated outside of sequences
How centralised interlocks simplify sequencing and fault finding

The lesson uses the filter example to show how multiple asset health conditions can be combined into a single interlock such as sequence filtration okay to start. This allows sequences to stay clean and focused on flow rather than being cluttered with unrelated checks.

By the end of this lesson you will understand how to design a clear interlock layer using UDTs and why managing interlocks up front makes complex sequence logic much easier to read maintain and extend later in the project.

TIA Portal enforces structure on certain interface TIA Portal enforces structure on certain interface elements to maintain consistency and navigation.

The project tree is one such element. It remains docked to the left, but it can be minimized or set to auto-collapse when not in use.

Understanding these constraints helps you focus on the areas that actually benefit from customization, such as editors and diagnostics.

Good layouts work with the software’s rules, not against them, resulting in faster setup and fewer frustrations.
