A little behind-the-scenes look at how I put together one of the lessons for the TIA Portal V20 course.

In this video, I build a small box filling station example from scratch while talking through the actual thought process behind the decisions being made, rather than just presenting a finished solution.

The example uses:

* Cause & Effect Matrix interlocks
* Structured Text (SCL) sequencing
* Weight checks and scale taring
* Simple state-machine logic
* PLC simulation testing

More importantly, it shows *why* the logic is structured this way:

* keeping interlocks outside the sequence
* separating sensor data from supervisory control
* handling timers correctly in state machines
* building interfaces that are easier to scale and troubleshoot

It's a very simple process example, but the engineering principles behind it are exactly the same ones used in much larger systems.

Latest Tip

TIA Portal enforces structure on certain interface TIA Portal enforces structure on certain interface elements to maintain consistency and navigation.

The project tree is one such element. It remains docked to the left, but it can be minimized or set to auto-collapse when not in use.

Understanding these constraints helps you focus on the areas that actually benefit from customization, such as editors and diagnostics.

Good layouts work with the software’s rules, not against them, resulting in faster setup and fewer frustrations.
