In this lesson we look in detail at the quarter turn valve manager and how device assets differ from instrument assets.

The lesson starts by explaining the two valve types used in the project. Quarter turn valves operate between open and closed states while modulating valves move to a variable position. In this lesson the focus is on the quarter turn valve manager.

We review the interface of the quarter turn valve manager and highlight the key differences compared to an instrument asset manager. Devices introduce actionable control inputs such as auto enable and mode selection which define how the valve should behave when commanded.

The available operating modes are explained including open on enable close on enable and a dual mode where the valve opens on enable and closes when the enable is removed. These modes support different real world valve actuation methods.

Inside the manager we examine how hand off and auto operation is handled using a dedicated operation mode function block and UDT. This manages manual and automatic control requests and retains mode state for HMI and system use.

The lesson walks through how manual open and close requests are processed and why these requests are latched and reset within the PLC rather than relying on the HMI. This avoids stuck commands and improves robustness.

Automatic control logic is then covered including how open and close requests are generated based on mode selection and auto enable. These requests are written into the asset data and later passed to the output mapping layer.

Valve status handling is explained including traveling state detection when feedback does not yet match the requested position. Fail to open and fail to close conditions are managed using timers configured through asset data parameters.

Alarm handling follows the same standardized approach used for instruments. Failed to open failed to close and signal errors such as both limit switches being active are detected and raised using reusable alarm management blocks.

Finally the lesson explains how overall valve health availability and position status are calculated. A valve can be healthy but unavailable if not in auto mode and position feedback is used to determine whether the valve is at its requested position.

This lesson establishes the core concepts used for device asset managers and prepares the groundwork for the modulating valve manager later in the course.

Latest Tip

Temporary variables are allocated only while the F Temporary variables are allocated only while the Function Block is executing. Once execution ends, their values are no longer retained.

Unlike statics, TEMP variables do not have guaranteed default values. If they are read before being written, they may contain unpredictable data.

This behavior often surprises engineers during online monitoring, where a TEMP variable appears true or nonzero without any visible logic writing to it.

The rule is simple. Always write to a TEMP variable before reading from it. Treat them as scratch memory, not storage.
